There are 6 statues of Joseph Priestley in England (in Birstall, Leeds, Birmingham, Oxford, Warrington and London). This statuette despicts Joseph as a boy when he was a pupil at Batley Grammar School, aged about 13, with adoptive parent Aunt Sarah, where he shows her his first experiments with air on spiders in a jar. Priestley gained notoriety through his publications and this brought him to the attention of William Petty, the 2ndEarl of Shelbourne who recruited him as librarian and tutor.
